What is a Slewing Crane Licence?
According to SafeWork (QLD & NSW), a slewing mobile crane is defined as a mobile crane which incorporates a boom jib that can be rotated. It excludes front-end loader, back-hoe, excavator or other earth moving equipment when configured for crane operation.
The mobile slewing crane licence over 100 tonnes allows the operation of mobile slewing cranes with a capacity of over 100 tonnes. The licence encompasses the operation of a non-slewing crane and the vehicle loading crane.
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to safely operate a slewing mobile crane with a capacity over 100 tonnes.
Slewing mobile crane means a mobile crane incorporating a boom or jib that can be slewed, but does not include:
- a front-end loader or
- a backhoe or
- an excavator or
- other earth moving equipment, when configured for crane operation.
This unit applies to the activities of a person operating a slewing mobile crane with a capacity over 100 tonnes that is a:
- non-slewing mobile crane with a capacity exceeding 3 tonnes
- slewing mobile crane with a capacity exceeding 100 tonnes
- vehicle loading crane with a capacity of 10 metre tonnes or more, excluding the application of load estimation and slinging techniques to move a load.
A person performing this work is required to hold a slewing mobile crane with a capacity over 100 tonnes high risk work (HRW) licence.
This unit requires a person operating a slewing mobile crane with a capacity over 100 tonnes to plan work, conduct routine checks, set up crane, transfer load, mobile load and shut down and secure crane after completing operations.

The training facilities are comfortable air conditioned with modern training aids. Tea and coffee making facilities are provided as well as fridges and a microwave for participants to use. There are several takeaway lunch spots of good quality within a kilometre. Lunch is not provided with the training.
Students have direct access to all the necessary plant required for the relevant course i.e. Cranes, EWP, Forklifts and Scaffold.
The Construction Training Centre offers a free car park for all students and visitors, as well as a cafe onsite.
